Utility Notification Center
of Colorado Receives $100,000 Federal Grant for Utility Damage Prevention
and Safety Enforcement; Colorado
Governor Ritter signs Proclamation for Dig Safely Month
Golden, Colorado, June 11, 2008 – The Utility Notification
Center of Colorado accepted the first federal grant check for $100,000 from
the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) to
expand the Center’s efforts in preventing damage to Colorado’s underground
utilities. This is the first federal grant of its type to any One-Call
center for damage prevention, education and enforcement efforts since the
passage of the federal PIPES Act of 2006.
UNCC will use the funds to expand its damage reporting
system and further enhance communication capabilities to manage and support
the statewide regional/local damage prevention councils. “We are very
excited to be developing the first of its kind Damage Prevention Report Card
that shares damage data and demographics information to indicate how
stakeholders are making an impact in the industry. The tool gives
stakeholders the ability to measure how effective they are in their efforts
that help to prevent damage and to keep people safe,” says executive
director, J.D. Maniscalco. “We are so appreciative to Table Mountain
Partners, Rudy Gonzales, Foresight Advantage, Barry Miller, UNCC business
partners that have helped us to secure the grant and have agreed to develop
this unique approach towards the sharing of information”.
Colorado Governor Bill Ritter proclaimed May 2008 as Dig
Safely Month in Colorado.
Currently state law requires that all damages to
underground facilities be reported to UNCC, the facility owner, and the
Colorado Public Utilities Commission.
